This book explores the multiple and changing ideas, concepts, and representations that shape contemporary cities in Asia in a historical perspective. It does so by using multiple sources, objects (architecture, planning, spaces and practices), and methods of inquiry. At a time when intense dynamics of urban development of Asian cities puzzle and disorient, Ideas of the City in Asian Settings offers knowledge about the ideas that lay beneath the historical and contemporary production of cities in Asia, in order to deepen our understanding of the processes and meanings of urban development in the continent. The book sheds more light on the vast array of rules and perspectives that make cities into complex objects that are continuously 'in the making'. Dans le tiers-monde, l’échec des grands programmes de « développement » - qui se sont soldés au mieux par des modernisations inégales et inégalitaires - est d’abord un échec de l’État. N’induit-il pas une crise de la légitimité et ne souligne-t-il pas l’étroitesse de sa base sociale, dans le même temps où ses capacités d’intervention sont réduites par la crise économique et les politiques d’ajustement structurel ? Dans un contexte de désengagement de l’État, la démocratie apparaît encore comme un processus ambigu, inachevé et souvent manipulé par l’État lui-même. Cependant, n’est-ce pas à une redéfinition du politique, des rapports entre État et société, qu’appellent les constats d’échec et les revendications légitimes qu’ils nourrissent ? De nouveaux acteurs n’émergent-ils pas un peu partout, qu’ils soient d’emblée politiques ou que se reconstituent des groupes sociaux ou économiques ?
